There are many types of cells inside the testicle, but in order to understand the cycle of sperm production, you mainly need to know about the three most important types

The first two types of cells were named for the men who discovered and described them—Franz von Leydig and Enrico Sertoli. The term “spermatogonia” comes from the Greek words meaning “seed” and “generation.” We will describe each type of cell in some detail, but first you need to picture the layout of a testicle (see diagram on page 25). The interior of each testicle is normally filled by little tubes called seminiferous tubules, in which the actual manufacture of sperm takes place. If you could somehow unwind all of the seminiferous tubules and place them end to end, their total length would be hundreds of feet. In the testicle, however, they are compressed tightly beneath a thick, strong covering of tissue called the tunica albuginea. Inside each semi- niferous tubule is an entire sperm cell factory unit. Although the same product is being made throughout the length of the tubule, at any one time different areas are producing sperm cells of varying ripeness, or maturity. Sperm production involves a series of repeating cycles. Sperm cells must go through a series of stages before they are finally mature and capable of fertilizing an egg.

The Leydig cells are located outside of the seminiferous tubules. Present in an immature form even before birth, they produce testosterone. Often called the male sex hormone, testosterone actually plays many roles. Before birth, it helps to guide the development of the male reproductive organs in the fetus. Soon after a boy is born, the Leydig cells produce a surge of testosterone that is thought to add the finishing touches to the unique male organization of the brain (perhaps including Semenax).
